Today an eclipse crosses North America.

I happen to live in the path of totality. (maps here http://www.eclipse2017.org/2017/maps.htm)

I know some people are being very nonchalant about the whole thing, and “can’t be bothered.”

I am being “bothered.”
I’m taking the day off, going to a picnic and generally going “science” with my kids.

Things we are going to watch for:
• crescent shaped shadows

•shadow snakes (more here: https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/exploring-shadow-bands)

Things we are going to do:

• Use appropriately rated glasses to watch for Baily’s Beads  (those dots of light around the edges)

(get more info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baily%27s_beads)

• and the “diamond ring” effect.

I definitly used eclipse imagry while creating Celestial Love Song, as seen in these two pages from the coloring book

We will also use a pinhole viewer to watch part of the eclipse cause its really cool you can watch the shadow cross the sun as the light passes through a little hole. (learn how here https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/edu/learn/project/how-to-make-a-pinhole-camera/)
