On the edge of town in Holbrook AZ, 19 miles from the back door of the Petrified Forest is the best rock shop, ever! Jim Gray’s Petrified Wood Co.
They have a rock yard where you can pick up peridot chunks, rose quartz chunks, geodes and you pay for them by weight. On the other side of the huge showroom, is a petrified wood yard.
Inside there are precut slabs of petrified wood- OMG the colors! And one day I dream of a table of this stuff, but it ain’t cheap.
Along the back corner the owner’s private collection of stone specimens in on display– so much beautiful stuff.
I’ve been here three times. Each time I leave with not nearly enough. I spend at least an hour, and I still leave thinking, oh darn I should have gotten….
Surprisingly enough this time iI didn’t buy any ammonites, or othoceras–my usual.
This time I picked up a few dyed and slices geodes and amethyst and citrine crystals. I also got my hubby a nice chunk of petrified wood.
I plan on trying out something fun with metal clay and setting the crystal chunks, I’ll wire wrap the geode slabs, and I’ll probably try some bezel setting with the dino bone (the domed cabochons)
